Term 1 and 2 2018-19

Vikings

English: The English Programme of Study to be followed with the following areas forming the basis for the reading, writing, spelling and grammar work for each individual term. These units of work are based on the Scholastics English Scheme of work for K.S. 2 which explores different genres within each unit of work.

  • Years 4 and 5: War Horse; Poetry of WW1
  • Years 6 and 5: Private Peaceful; Poetry of WW1

Maths: Plans to follow the 2014 Mathematics Curriculum based Hamilton Plans for Years 4 and 5 and on the Abacus Mathematics Scheme of Work for Year 6.

Geography/History/Art/Design and Technology:

  • Year 4: Where on Earth? Our world from the ISS; Why different weather? Weather around the world.
  • Years 5 and 6: Investigating our local area; What a state! California 
  • Britain’s settlement by the Anglo-Saxons and Scot: Anglo-Saxon art and culture; Christian conversion; Canterbury, Iona and Lindisfarne.
  • The Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor: Viking raids and invasion.

RE:

  • Year 4 (with Year 3): Islam – inspirational people; Christianity – The 10 Commandments; Remembrance Day; Christmas.
  • Years 5 and 6: Hinduism: worship, pilgrimage and special places; Christianity: beliefs and questions / Christmas.

Science: Scientific skills including the use of different scientific techniques to answer questions, the setting up of simple comparative and fair tests, being able to make systematic and careful observations and recording and presenting data in a variety of ways.

Year 4 (with Year 3)

  • Animals including Humans: Habitats and Food Chains; Construct and interpret a variety of food chains and food webs; Identify producers, predators and prey; Recognise that living things are interdependent; Recognise that animals and plants are suited to and adapt to their environment; Investigate living things in a considerate way.
  • Nutrition: Sorting foods/ Digestion; Identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat; Gathering, recording, classifying and presenting data in a variety of ways to help in answering questions. 

Years 5 and 6

  • Properties of materials: Demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes; Explain that some changes result in the formation of new materials, and that this kind of change is not usually reversible, including changes associated with burning and the action of acid on bicarbonate of soda.
  • Light: Recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines; Use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye; Explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes; Use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.

PSHE: New Beginnings; Getting On and Falling Out; Anti-bullying Week Responsibility; Co-operation; Tolerance; Appreciation.

PE: Football; Swimming.

French: The focus of our study is in French and we aim for our pupils to develop the ability to communicate effectively using accurate pronunciation and to be able to present ideas and information orally. To be able to write phrases from memory in order to write sentences and express ideas clearly.  We use the Comète 1 French scheme of work as a basis for this subject area.

ICT: To be used cross curricular whenever possible . 

  • Years 4 and 5: Working in groups, the children will create their own sports news report which they will share and work on together using Google Docs.
  • Year 6: Creating a PowerPoint/e-book

Music: On-going skills; Performance work – To use their voices expressively and creatively; Learning recorder/keyboard.

Events: Harvest Service – St Giles’s Tetsworth; Remembrance Day; Children in Need; Christmas Nativity Service – St Giles’s Church Tetsworth.

Term 3 and 4 2018-19

Aladdin

English: The English Programme of Study to be followed with the following areas forming the basis for the reading, writing, spelling and grammar work for each individual term. These units of work are based on the Scholastics English Scheme of work for K.S. 2 which explores different genres within each unit of work.

  • Years 4 and 5: Aladdin; The Wreck of the Zanzibar.
  • Years 6 and 5: Lewis Carroll; Other cultures and traditions.

Maths: Plans to follow the 2014 Mathematics Curriculum based on the Abacus Mathematics Scheme of Work.

Geography/History/Art/Design and Technology:

  • Year 4: Who are the global caretakers?  We are! What can we discover about the local area?
  • Years 5 and 6: Where does our water come from? How do we impact on our landscape?
  • A study of human and physical geography of a region within North America – Jamaica.

RE:

  • Year 4 (with Year 3): Christianity – symbols and Christian expression; Easter.
  • Years 5 and 6: Christianity: the journey of life and death; Easter.

Science: Scientific skills including the use of different scientific techniques to answer questions, the setting up of simple comparative and fair tests, being able to make systematic and careful observations and recording and presenting data in a variety of ways.

Year 4 (with Year 3)

  • Electricity: Recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit; To construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. 
  • Animals including Humans: Digestive System and Teeth; To know that different kinds of human teeth and understand how the shape of teeth is linked to their function; To consider the link between the shape of teeth and diet; To know which foods are most damaging for the teeth; To understand why we need to brush teeth to remove plaque; To know how we can care for our teeth; To plan on investigation into the effect of different drinks on teeth.

Years 5 and 6

  • All Living Things: Describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals; Give reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics. 
  • Evolution and inheritance: Recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago Recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents; Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.

PSHE: Going for Goals; Good to Be Me; Honesty; Caring; Hope.

PE: Dance; P.E. Hockey; Swimming

Term 5 and 6 2018-19

The Iron Man

 

English:

  • Years 4 and 5: The Iron Man / The Iron Woman
  • Years 6 and 5: Journeys

Science: Scientific skills including the use of different scientific techniques to answer questions, the setting up of simple comparative and fair tests, being able to make systematic and careful observations and recording and presenting data in a variety of ways.

Year 4 (with Year 3)

  • Sound: To associate sound with something vibrating; That sounds get fainter the further you are from the source; About how sound travels outwards from a source through different materials; That there are different ways in which sounds can be varied; About patterns between pitch and size of the sound source; About the relationship between volume and strength of vibrations.
  • Light: Understand that dark is the absence of light; Set up an investigation and make predictions; Understand how surfaces reflect light; Recognise that a mirror appears to reverse an image; Identify some parts of the eye.

Years 5 and 6

All living things: animal and human life cycles; plant life cycles; Pupils will be taught to describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird; describe the changes as humans develop to old age; describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.

ICT: ICT to be used cross curricular whenever possible

  • Years 4 and 5: The children will devise their own characters, plot and storyboard before filming a short movie
  • Year 6: Programming using Scratch

Geography/History/Art/D.T.

  • Year 4: How do I impact on children and families far away?; California – here we come.
  • Years 5 and 6: Tourism around the world; Welcome to Argentina
  • Topic: A study of Greek life and achievements and their influence on the western world – Ancient Greece

RE:

  • Year 4 (with Year 3): Christianity – inspirational people; Teachings and authority
  • Years 5 and 6: Hinduism: beliefs and questions; Islam: worship, pilgrimage and sacred places
