PSHE

PSHE at Tetsworth Primary School
Intent
At Tetsworth Primary School, our ambitious and inclusive PSHE curriculum plays a vital role in supporting the personal development, wellbeing, and character education of every child. Through the Jigsaw PSHE programme, we provide a whole-school approach to personal, social, health and economic education, including statutory Relationships and Health Education (RHE).
Our intent is to equip all pupils with the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to lead confident, healthy, and independent lives — both now and in the future. The Jigsaw curriculum brings together PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills, and spiritual development in a comprehensive and progressive framework.
As a mixed-aged school, we deliver PSHE through a stage-not-age approach, ensuring that learning is tailored to pupils’ individual stages of personal and emotional development. This allows all children to engage in sensitive discussions, explore age-appropriate themes, and develop essential life skills in a safe and supportive environment.
We want every pupil at Tetsworth Primary School to grow as a kind, resilient, and responsible individual — ready to contribute positively to the world around them.
Implementation
Our PSHE curriculum is implemented through the Jigsaw programme, which provides a carefully sequenced and spiral curriculum covering all statutory elements of Relationships and Health Education, while promoting personal growth and wellbeing.
Jigsaw is divided into six half-termly ‘puzzles’ that are taught across the school at an appropriate developmental stage:
  1. Being Me in My World – exploring belonging, identity, and responsibilities within school and the wider community.
  2. Celebrating Difference – learning about diversity, respect, and inclusion, and understanding bullying and kindness.
  3. Dreams and Goals – setting personal goals, developing resilience, and understanding perseverance and teamwork.
  4. Healthy Me – promoting physical and emotional health, making informed choices, and understanding wellbeing.
  5. Relationships – building healthy relationships, developing empathy, and understanding different family structures.
  6. Changing Me – exploring growth, change, and puberty in an age-appropriate and sensitive way.
Lessons are taught weekly and incorporate mindfulness practices, discussions, stories, and creative activities that help pupils reflect, self-regulate, and develop emotional intelligence.
Teachers skilfully adapt lessons for our mixed-aged classes, ensuring that learning is inclusive and accessible for all. Pupils with additional needs receive appropriate support to fully participate and benefit from PSHE education. The programme is also integrated across the wider curriculum and school life — through assemblies, community activities, and pupil voice initiatives — ensuring a consistent approach to personal development.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE curriculum at Tetsworth Primary School is reflected in the confidence, empathy, and maturity of our pupils. They develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to lead happy, safe, and fulfilling lives.
Our pupils:
  • Demonstrate strong emotional literacy, understanding and expressing their feelings appropriately.
  • Build positive relationships, showing respect, kindness, and empathy towards others.
  • Make informed, responsible choices about their health, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Understand diversity and inclusion, valuing differences and celebrating individuality.
  • Show resilience and self-belief, setting goals and working towards them with determination.
  • Contribute positively to our school and wider community, living out our shared values.
Through the Jigsaw PSHE programme and our stage-not-age approach, we ensure that all pupils — regardless of age, background, or ability — develop the knowledge and skills to thrive personally and socially. Pupils leave Tetsworth Primary School as confident, caring, and responsible individuals, prepared for the challenges and opportunities of modern life.
