Physical Education (PE)
Intent
At Tetsworth Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is a vital part of every child’s education and personal development. Our PE curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils — across our mixed-age classes — to enjoy being active, develop physical confidence, and understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
We aim to provide every child with opportunities to:
  • Develop key movement skills such as balance, agility, coordination, and control.
  • Build confidence, teamwork, and resilience through both cooperative and competitive activities.
  • Learn respect, fairness, and sportsmanship in all physical contexts.
  • Foster a lifelong love of movement, sport, and wellbeing.
Our vision is that all pupils at Tetsworth Primary School leave with the motivation, knowledge, and physical competence to lead active, healthy, and happy lives.
Implementation
At Tetsworth, our PE curriculum is carefully planned to meet the needs of mixed-age classes, ensuring that skills and knowledge are taught progressively and revisited regularly. Lessons are differentiated so that all pupils — regardless of age or ability — are challenged, supported, and able to achieve success.
We deliver high-quality PE lessons through two complementary programmes:
  • GetSet4PE provides a structured and progressive scheme of work that ensures coverage across a wide range of physical activities including games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous challenges.
  • Real PE supports the development of the whole child by focusing on fundamental movement skills as well as personal, social, and cognitive development. This approach helps every pupil to succeed, particularly within our mixed-age setting.
In addition to curriculum PE, pupils enjoy a rich programme of physical enrichment opportunities, including:
  • Forest School sessions that promote resilience, teamwork, and physical confidence through outdoor learning and exploration.
  • Swimming lessons for all Key Stage 2 pupils, ensuring that every child becomes a confident and safe swimmer.
  • Partnership sporting events with local schools, offering pupils the chance to represent Tetsworth in friendly competitions, festivals, and tournaments.
  • Our annual Whole School Sports Day, which brings our mixed-age community together to celebrate effort, participation, and enjoyment through friendly competition and shared achievement.
Impact
Our inclusive and progressive approach to PE ensures that pupils at Tetsworth Primary School:
  • Develop physical competence, coordination, and fitness across a broad range of activities.
  • Understand how to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle and the importance of physical wellbeing.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, resilience, and respect both in lessons and in wider sporting events.
  • Take pride in representing their school at partnership sports events and look forward to whole-school occasions such as Sports Day.
  • Thrive in mixed-age settings, where older pupils act as positive role models and younger pupils are supported and inspired by their peers.
  • Leave school with the confidence, motivation, and enjoyment to continue participating in physical activity throughout their lives.
We measure impact through teacher assessment, pupil voice, lesson observations, and participation in school and community events. Above all, our children tell us they love PE, feel confident, and enjoy being active — reflecting our belief that physical education should be inclusive, enriching, and fun for everyone.
