Tetsworth Primary School Maths

Intent
At Tetsworth Primary School, our intent is to ensure that all pupils develop a deep, secure and adaptable understanding of mathematics. We aim to create confident, enthusiastic mathematicians who can reason, problem-solve and make rich connections across mathematical ideas.
We follow the National Curriculum for Mathematics, which provides a clear progression of skills and knowledge from the Early Years through to Year 6. To support our delivery, we use the White Rose Maths scheme, which helps us structure learning into small, connected steps that build on prior knowledge and promote a mastery approach.
As a small school with mixed-age classes, our mathematics curriculum is carefully planned to ensure full National Curriculum coverage while maintaining progression and challenge for all learners. We strive for every child to become fluent in number, confident in using mathematical vocabulary, and able to apply their learning to a range of real-life contexts.
Our overarching aim is to help pupils develop mathematical confidence, curiosity, and resilience, preparing them not just for future learning but for everyday life.
Implementation
Mathematics is taught daily at Tetsworth Primary School using the White Rose Maths framework, which supports the delivery of the National Curriculum. Teachers plan learning sequences that are well-structured, logical, and responsive to the needs of pupils within mixed-age classes.
Lessons follow a mastery approach, where key concepts are explored in depth to ensure secure understanding before moving on. Teachers use concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations to support pupils in grasping new ideas and building lasting understanding.
Small-step progression enables all children to keep up, not catch up. Differentiation is achieved through questioning, depth of reasoning, and targeted support rather than by reducing the level of challenge. Teachers regularly assess understanding through discussion, observation, and quick assessments, adapting teaching to meet individual needs.
Reasoning and problem-solving are integral parts of every lesson. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, explore multiple strategies, and work collaboratively to develop their mathematical communication. Manipulatives and visual models are used regularly across the school to reinforce understanding and support mathematical fluency.
Our mixed-age structure enables pupils to revisit and deepen concepts over time, building strong connections between different areas of mathematics. Regular opportunities for consolidation and challenge ensure that every pupil is appropriately supported and stretched.
Impact
At Tetsworth Primary School, pupils develop a secure, deep understanding of mathematical concepts and are able to apply their knowledge confidently and independently. They show enthusiasm for mathematics and a willingness to tackle challenges with perseverance and curiosity.
Assessment information and pupil outcomes demonstrate that children make strong progress across all year groups, regardless of starting points. Pupils are able to articulate their mathematical thinking, use appropriate vocabulary, and explain how they solve problems.
Through the mastery approach supported by White Rose Maths, pupils gain the confidence and competence to apply mathematical skills to new situations both in school and in everyday life. Our mixed-age model fosters collaboration and peer support, helping children develop confidence in sharing and discussing ideas.
By the time they leave Tetsworth Primary School, pupils are resilient, reflective, and confident mathematicians who have developed a strong foundation for future learning in mathematics and beyond.
