Foreign Language Learning for All
Intent
At Tetsworth Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language is an essential part of every child’s education. Through our partnership with Language Angels, we are committed to providing inclusive, engaging, and progressive language learning opportunities for our pupils.
Our intent is to ensure that every child, regardless of age or prior experience, develops:
-
A genuine enthusiasm for language learning.
-
The confidence to communicate in another language.
-
An understanding of different cultures and communities beyond their own.
-
The knowledge and skills required to meet and exceed national curriculum expectations in foreign languages.
Our classes are mixed-age, and we are dedicated to ensuring clear progression and challenge for all learners. Every pupil will have the opportunity to develop their linguistic skills at a pace appropriate to their stage of learning, not just their year group.
Implementation
Our language curriculum is delivered using Language Angels, a comprehensive and fully resourced scheme that supports mixed-age planning and teaching.
-
Lessons are divided into three progressive teaching types: Early Learning, Intermediate, and Progressive.
-
Units are allocated based on pupils’ existing language knowledge rather than age alone, ensuring appropriate stretch and support for all learners.
-
Mixed-age classes follow a two-year rolling programme, ensuring that no child repeats content, while still covering all Programme of Study attainment targets.
-
Each lesson contains built-in differentiation with three levels of challenge in desk-based tasks and activities.
-
Teachers have access to a wealth of resources including pupil knowledge organisers, picture vocabulary sheets, unit glossaries, karaoke songs, videos, and interactive games to make learning dynamic and memorable.
-
Progression is continually tracked, allowing teachers to identify pupils who are on track, exceeding, or requiring additional support in their language journey.
Our staff are supported with ongoing guidance and bespoke planning advice from the Language Angels team to ensure effective sequencing, clear progression, and engaging delivery across all phases.
Impact
Through our foreign language provision, pupils:
-
Develop strong foundational language skills, enabling them to communicate and express themselves with increasing confidence and accuracy.
-
Build resilience, curiosity, and cultural awareness, preparing them to become global citizens.
-
Experience consistent progression in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation across the key stages.
-
Achieve age-related expectations or beyond, as tracked through our comprehensive assessment and progression tools.
By the end of Year 6, all pupils will have experienced a broad and balanced language curriculum that equips them with the skills and enthusiasm to continue their language learning journey into secondary education.
Our mixed-age approach ensures that every child, in every class, can access high-quality language learning — achieving success through flexibility, inclusivity, and ambition for all.
