Computing
Welcome to Computing at Tetsworth Primary School!
Intent
At Tetsworth Primary School, we believe that Computing is an essential part of preparing children for life in a modern, digital world. Our curriculum equips pupils to use technology confidently, creatively and safely. We want our children to be not just users of technology, but thoughtful creators and responsible digital citizens.
As a small, mixed-age school, we ensure that every child experiences a broad and balanced Computing curriculum that builds knowledge and skills progressively from Early Years through to Year 6.
Implementation
We follow the National Curriculum for Computing, organised into three main strands:
- Computer Science – understanding how computers and networks work and learning the principles of programming.
- Information Technology – using a range of digital tools to create, organise and present work effectively.
- Digital Literacy – using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.
We use Purple Mash as our main resource to support teaching and learning in Computing. This provides a consistent, engaging structure across all classes and ensures clear progression, even within mixed-age groups. Lessons are adapted to meet pupils’ needs and often link with other curriculum areas to make learning purposeful.
Online safety is a key priority. We use the 2BeSafe programme to teach children how to protect their personal information, communicate safely, and show respect online. This is reinforced through PSHE lessons, assemblies, and special events such as Safer Internet Day.
Impact
By the time pupils leave Tetsworth Primary School, they are confident and responsible users of technology. They can use a variety of programs and digital devices to express themselves, solve problems and present their ideas. Pupils understand how to stay safe online and can make sensible, informed decisions about their digital lives.
Teachers assess progress through observation, discussion and outcomes from Purple Mash activities to ensure pupils are developing secure skills and knowledge over time.
Computing Curriculum Overview
Because our school has mixed-age classes, Computing is taught on a rolling programme to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum.
| Class Group | Example Topics & Skills |
| Years N – 1 | Exploring technology around us, following instructions (algorithms), simple coding, creating digital art and stories, making music, staying safe online. |
| Years 2–3 | Developing coding and debugging skills, using email safely, creating presentations, exploring spreadsheets, touch typing, using micro:bit devices, learning about digital citizenship. |
| Years 4–6 | Advanced coding (2Code and Python), understanding networks and the internet, using spreadsheets and data tools, blogging, 3D design, micro:bit projects, and exploring online privacy and cyberbullying. |
Staying Safe Online
Online safety is woven throughout our Computing curriculum and wider school life. Children learn how to protect their personal information, think critically about online content, and act respectfully towards others. Our aim is to help all pupils become confident, safe and responsible users of technology.
